The first three characters are the manufacturer identifier, the next five characters are the vehicle attributes, the next seven characters are the vehicle serial number, and the last character is the check digit.
- Look up the manufacturer identifier: The first three characters of the VIN are used to identify the manufacturer of the vehicle. This can be looked up in a VIN decoder chart or online VIN decoder tool.
- Check the vehicle attributes: The next five characters of the VIN are used to identify the vehicle attributes such as the model, body style, and engine type.
- Check the serial number: The next seven characters of the VIN are the vehicle's serial number, which is unique to each vehicle.
- Verify the check digit: The last character of the VIN is the check digit, which is used to verify the accuracy of the VIN. This can be verified by using a mathematical formula or by using an online VIN verification tool.
